Welcoming a New Baby to Your Family? Time to Update Your Insurance
September is National Baby Safety Month
Few events can compare to welcoming a new baby to your family. It’s the beginning of a whole new way of life, as well as a lot of responsibility. In recognition of National Baby Safety Month, we share the following insurance considerations to help protect your precious bundle of joy.
Health Insurance
It is likely that your health insurance covers your prenatal care and childbirth, but exceptions may apply; for example, if you are under age 26 and still on your parents’ policy. In any case, it’s a good idea to check in with your carrier to see what your coverage includes.
In addition, notify your insurance provider before your baby arrives and ask about deadlines and other requirements. If you and your partner have different health insurance plans, review your options to see if it makes sense to switch to one family plan to save money.
Life Insurance
If you don’t yet have life insurance, now is the time. It will provide income as a safety net for your family in the event you die, and may make a significant difference in their quality of life. You may have limited coverage through your employer, but it’s often not enough to provide long-term stability for surviving dependents.
There are two types of life insurance—term and permanent. We can help you decide which works best for you and your family, and in what amount. Many people don’t realize how affordable this peace of mind can be.
Home & Auto Insurance
Your home and auto insurance likely won’t need to change in the short term, unless you are getting a new vehicle to accommodate your growing family, or putting an addition on your home. If you’ll be carpooling, you may want to increase your auto policy’s liability coverage, and if at some point you add a pool, trampoline or other amenity to your property that’s considered an “attractive nuisance,” you will need additional homeowners or umbrella coverage.
With You at Every Stage
Your insurance needs will change regularly throughout your family’s life, from welcoming a new baby to adding teenagers to your auto policy, sending kids off to college and planning for your retirement.
